What is Parkinson's disease?
The symptoms of Parkinson's disease are caused by the degeneration of a structure of the brain called the substantia nigra. This causes a lack of a neurotransmitter called dopamine.
After Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease is the most prevalent neurodegenerative condition. According to a Singaporean study, Parkinson's disease strikes just as frequently as it does in the West. Aged 50 and older, three out of every thousand people had this condition. Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders such essential tremor, dystonia, chorea, and myoclonus will become more prevalent in Singapore as the population ages. There is currently no treatment for these diseases, just like for many other medical conditions. However, there are medications that work well to manage symptoms and enhance daily functioning. Patients with advanced disease may also be treated with minimally invasive surgery.
