What is Diabetes?
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease brought on by either the body's loss of the capacity to use the hormone insulin or the pancreas' inability to secrete enough of it.
Insulin regulates the process by which bloodstream glucose (sugar) enters body cells. When insulin is absent or produced insufficiently, it causes hyperglycemia, or high blood sugar, in patients with diabetes.
The International Diabetes Federation estimates that 230 million people worldwide have diabetes, and that number will rise to 350 million by 2025.
